A Very Different Swinging 60s London...

James Barnor - 1950 (Fotoğrafı çeken bilinmiyor)

During a time when black models were rarely photographed let alone seen in print, James Barnor broke the boundaries of 60s photography by photographing a group of black women in various famous locations across London. Although the beehived hair, heavy kohl eyeliner, miniskirts, locations and colourways are clearly that of swinging 60s London, to me these photos have always held an air of sassyness, there's something very poetic, touching and isolating about them. The women used for the photos were a variety of local models and women spotted at bus stops etc which makes the photos all the more poetic to me. Being able to see 1960s London through the eyes of a Ghanian immigrant makes for some beautiful photos, I hope you all enjoy.
